“Choosing wisely”
Read Ezra 8:10-12
“Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33
Parents always encourage their children to be wise when choosing their friends and who they choose to date and marry. Spending time with the wrong group of people can lead a person down a path of disobedience, rebellion, and rejection of God’s ways.
When the ancient Israelites returned from exile in Babylon, they were given very specific instructions not to intermingle with the pagan peoples who lived in the regions surrounding Jerusalem. God had given this command…
Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them at any time…Ezra 8:12 NIV
But why? God gave them this guideline to keep them from falling back into the sin of idolatry as they had before the exile. These nations worshipped many false idols and God wanted to protect his people from their influence.
In the same way, God still warns his people to be careful to not be corrupted by the sinful culture of this world. Choosing to spend time with people who love God and desire to live according to His ways is an important step towards learning to be faithful to God’s call.
In what ways do your friends help you become the person God wants?
What are the qualities of a friend who helps you grow in your faith?
Lord Jesus, help me to find friends who love you and will help me become the person you created me to be. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
