In the business world, it is often said that good is the enemy of great. Too often, people settle for something that seems “good enough” when what is really needed is to push forward and strive for something that is excellent. This mentality is prevalent in every layer of this culture from sports to music to academics to fitness-too many people settle for less than their very best.

This can be seen in the life of Abraham’s father Terah. He set out from Ur to travel to Canaan, the future home of the Israelites, but instead of taking his family all the way to the Promised Land, he settled in Harran which seemed “good enough” to him. God would have to call Terah’s son Abraham to leave Harran and travel to the land where he would become the father of the Israelite nation.

It’s tempting to settle for what seems good enough and mistakenly miss out on God’s best for us-especially when everyone else is doing the same. Being fully obedient to God’s call will allow God to bless us with His very best, not just something we settled for instead.

Father, help me to resist the temptation settle for less than who You have called me to be and what You are calling me to do. Give me the courage to seek Your best regardless of what other people in my life choose to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
