Understanding Our Identity

Colossians 2

Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” (John 8:53)

Read John 8:51-59

If you ask someone the question “who are you?”, they will most often tell what they do rather than who they are. They will say they are a teacher, an engineer, an athlete, or a housewife. There seems to be a fundamental disconnect with understanding the difference between what a person does and who a person truly is. True identity is based on relationships not occupation or hobbies.

Jesus, possibly more than anyone who ever lived, fully understood His own identity. His identity was defined by His relationship with God rather than the things He did while here on earth. When asked by the Jews who were opposing Him, “Who do you think you are?” Jesus responded with, “Before Abraham was born, I am!” rather than rabbi, teacher, or healer. His identity as Jesus the Son was in deeply rooted in His connection with God the Father.

How would you answer this question? Who are you? Consider that your true identity can be found in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. If you are in Christ, then you are a child of God and His most precious creation, created to live your life in a way that brings glory and honor to His name.

Father, help me to understand that my identity is not found in what I do but who I am in You. Today, may my life bring You honor and glory in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
