Praying for Others

Read Colossians 1:9

One of the privileges of being a Christ-follower is having the opportunity to pray for others. Praying for our spouses, our parents, our children, our grandchildren, our coworkers, and our friends is an important part of our daily walk with Christ. “Intercessory” prayer is exactly what it sounds like-interceding on behalf of someone else. Before we doubt that praying for others makes a difference, we need to remember the words of James 5:16…

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 NIV

Understanding that as faithful followers of Christ, our prayers are “powerful and effective” should motivate us to pray for those we love each day.

But what should we pray? How do we know we are praying the right words? Sometimes, our prayer life is hindered because we don’t take time to pray, and we are not sure what to say.

Keeping in mind that this Colossian church is facing a crisis as false teachers are leading the people astray, it is no surprise to learn that Paul is fervently praying for this church and for their future.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. Colossians 1:9 NIV

We know that Epaphras traveled to Rome to talk with Paul directly and report the threats to the Colossian church. Clearly, before Paul even began to consider the letter he would write, he began to pray for them. Every time God brought them to mind, Paul would pray for this church. He didn’t overcomplicate or overthink things, he simply lifted them up every time he thought about them. This should remind us of the words of Paul to the Thessalonians…

Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NIV

This carries the idea of quick prayers said in the car, or in the shower, or while answering email, or doing anything else.

“Lord, protect”

“Lord, lead”

“Lord, heal”

“Lord, provide”

“Lord, You know what is needed…”

Questions to consider:

Who has God laid on your heart today that is need of prayer?

What is holding you back from praying for this person?

Each time this person comes to mind, lift up a quick prayer according to their need.
